Benefits of Servo Tip Dressing

Changer & Dresser’s (i.e. Kyokutoh globally) servo tip dressing products are a line of tip dressers that provide advanced feedback and a simplified installation process. They were developed after noticing a demand for more feedback on systems within a manufacturing plant. Changer & Dresser has worked with several robot manufacturers to develop these servo dressing systems to accommodate our customer’s needs. Our current servo integrated products include the DH-SVR2, CD-SVR, CD-SVR-SG, and CDEL.

What is Servo Tip Dressing?

The importance of a servo motor in tip dressing is to integrate torque feedback and positioning control into the dressing and changing process of spot welding. This allows the user fine tune their dress settings, and also have the parameters preconfigured into their system when they first receive the robot. The additional feedback also tracks when certain issues occur and catches problems as they are happening. Additionally, the system can detect issues with teaching that would normally be missed by a non-servo system.

For example, if you are tip dressing with a broken blade or a damaged gear, the system will alert the user to a torque fault and allow for the user to address the problem immediately. The user can also pull up advanced feedback charts within the robot pendant to optimize their dressing process. If the tip dresser has a worn cutter blade or chips have clogged inside the unit, the servo motor can produce a low torque fault.

Servo Tip Dressing

  • Servo motor and additional components required (purchased from robot manufacturer)
  • Motor rotation and torque confirmed in monitoring software

Electric Non-Servo Tip Dressing

  • I/O required for motor activate and rotation confirmation
  • Motor starter needed
  • Labor cost incurred for all electrical connections
  • High power cable needed

Benefits

Many people may ask, “Why would I choose servo dressing?” or say “It’s more expensive and the same checks can be accomplished manually.” What isn’t considered is the amount of time and effort that goes into setting up a standard electric motor. Simple issues like incorrect wiring which causes incorrect dresser rotation are not an issue with servo motors.

With the servo tip dresser, setup can be completed in three simple steps:

  1. Bolt down servo tip dresser in a robot cell
  2. Plug in the power and encoder cables
    • Motor settings may be preprogrammed into the robot controller
  3. Teach a position on the tip dress

Once these steps have been completed, you are set to use your servo tip dresser.
Note: If the chip collection option is selected, user may have to connect air and the valve I/O to the robot.

With C&D’s servo tip dresser, you have direct control of all tip dressing parameters and can make sure that all settings adhere to your exact needs through the robot pendant. Customizations include:

  • Finetuning the dresser rotation speed
  • Adjusting the minimum and maximum torque parameters
  • Setting the maximum number of cuts on the cutter blade
  • Setting multiple tip dress schedules for new or welded tips
  • Utilizing multiple guns with different tip dress schedules
Robot Pendant

The servo tip dressing system can diagnose errors such as worn cutters, late blade contact, off teaching position, unstable dresses, and more. Error messages will appear on the robot teaching pendant with the exact error codes and instructions to fix issues. The built in error system is useful since users with minimal tip dressing experience are able to diagnose issues immediately.

If issues are occurring with the servo dressing process, you can view the system graphs that show dresser speed, and torque. These graphs can give more in-depth feedback that isn’t normally available. One may also review graphs while optimizing dress settings to ensure they are achieving the perfect dress.

Many customers will link the errors outputted by the dress process into their own error management system. This enables plant employees to track and eliminate where problems are occurring and reduce downtime. Even if error notifications are accidentally cleared on the pendant, they still appear in the error log of the robot.

With many users moving towards the industry 4.0 standard, servo dressing allows for the tip dressing process to be accurately monitored.
